Global Goals, Local Action: Rotary Commemorates the United Nations at 80

"The United Nations was not created to take humanity to heaven — it was created to save us from hell" – Melissa Flemming, UN
That truth echoed throughout our recent time on the global stage, where WASH-RAG Ambassadors and Rotary leaders gathered, hosted a booth, engaged in meaningful conversations, and welcomed several new Ambassadors into the movement. What became abundantly clear is this: the world’s challenges are not abstract concepts debated in conference rooms — they are lived realities in communities everywhere. And Rotary stands uniquely positioned at the intersection of vision and action.
WASH-RAG Ambassadors Richard Chinn (D5150) and Ciera Martin (D5220) hosted a booth that became a hub for meaningful dialogue around water, sanitation, hygiene, and community-driven solutions. We connected with Rotarians, Interact Reps, development professionals, and partners from around the world — and welcomed several new WASH-RAG Ambassadors committed to advancing water partnerships at the local and global level.
We were especially encouraged by the visit and engagement of Rotary International President Francesco Arreza, who stopped by the WASH-RAG booth to learn more about current WASH initiatives and engage in thoughtful conversation about Rotary’s critical role in advancing water security, public health, and sustainable development. The President’s visible support reinforced that WASH remains central to Rotary’s mission and impact.
Today, all 193 UN member states have recommitted to accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since 1990, global efforts have lifted 1.5 billion people out of extreme poverty, expanded access to electricity to 92% of the world’s population, reduced child and maternal mortality, increased girls’ access to education, and made significant progress against HIV. These gains are deeply connected to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Yet only 27% of SDG targets are currently on track to be achieved by 2030. Complex challenges like water scarcity, climate change, and global health emergencies cannot be solved by governments alone. Rotary fills critical gaps by convening multilevel partnerships — bringing together civil society, the private sector, and community leaders to design solutions with communities, not for them.
As Rotarians and WASH advocates, we carry forward a legacy rooted in action. The promise of clean water, dignity, and peace demands partnership, persistence, and leadership. No nation can do this alone — and Rotary was never meant to.

The Importance of WASH-RAG Membership Recruitment
Membership in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Rotary Action Group (WASH-RAG) is considered crucial for Rotarians, Rotaractors, and professionals because it offers specialised technical support, networking opportunities and resources to enhance the sustainability and impact of WASH projects worldwide.
As an officially recognised Action Group, it helps members move beyond just building infrastructure toward creating lasting, community-driven change.
Here is why WASH-RAG membership is so important:
1. Enhanced Project Success and Sustainability
- Expert Review: Members can submit their Global Grant applications to the Professional Services Team, which reviews them to improve design, sustainability, and likelihood of approval by The Rotary Foundation.
- Funding Incentives: The WASH-RAG Fund can provide a $2,000 donation to a Global Grant if the project receives a successful review, supporting the financial viability of the project.
- Long-Term Impact: The group focuses on ensuring projects are not just installed but maintained, using tools like the "Sustainability Index Tool" and focusing on behavior change and training.
2. Expert Network and Resources
- Technical Expertise: Members have access to a pool of professionals who provide advice on complex WASH issues, such as water quality, borehole construction, and sanitation, ensuring projects are technically sound.
- Ambassador Network: The group provides over 100 ambassadors worldwide to help connect local clubs with international partners and technical resources.
- Best Practices: Members have access to a library of best practices and "how-to" guides for various WASH activities.
3. Collaboration and Networking
- Finding Partners: WASH-RAG can help clubs connect with other clubs and organisations to build coalitions and find international partners for Global Grants.
- Partnerships: The group leverages partnerships with outside organisations, such as WaterAid, Water for People, UNICEF and Engineers Without Borders to support long-term programs.
4. Direct Impact on Global Health
- Targeting Core Issues: WASH-RAG helps tackle the critical need for clean water and sanitation, which directly reduces waterborne diseases and improves the lives of millions.
- Education and Safety: Projects, such as WASH in Schools (WinS), improve school attendance — particularly for girls — and protect them from violence by providing safe, private sanitation.
5. Education and Advocacy
- Knowledge Sharing: Members receive, and can contribute to, newsletters, webinars and social media, staying updated on the latest in WASH.
- Advocacy: The group supports, members in advocating for policies that bring about systemic change at local and national levels.
Membership is open to all who want to make a difference, not just Rotarians, making it a diverse, and, knowledgeable community dedicated to solving the water crisis.
BREW + WASHRAG = Fellowship with Impact
BREW (Beers Rotarians Enjoy Worldwide) is a Rotary Fellowship built on the simple idea that fellowship can fuel impact. By gathering Rotarians who enjoy sharing a pint, BREW turns social events, brewery visits, and brew fests into meaningful fundraising that supports safe water, sanitation, and hygiene projects around the globe through its partnership with WASH-RAG.
It’s the perfect partnership by design:
WASHRAG brings the technical expertise and life-changing project pipeline… and BREW brings the fun, the breweries, and the fundraising energy. Together, it’s truly a case of the sum being greater than the parts — using the universal language of beer to help tackle the global water crisis… one glass, one project, and one village at a time.
The BREW/WASHRAG partnership by design is a model for the over 90 other Rotary Fellowships and 27 other Rotary Action groups to replicate. Each Fellowship could choose a RAG and help financial support them as the RAG utilizes the donations to fund impactful projects, thereby benefiting millions of people around the world and giving fellowship members additional benefits and impact.
Each year, BREW proudly makes a annual donation of about $5,000 to support WASHRAG-selected water projects. Since 2020, BREW has donated an impressive $45,000 — and we’re just getting started.
The highlight each year is the legendary BREW/WASHRAG BASH, held in conjunction with the Rotary International Convention, where the annual donation is presented.
Last year’s Bash in Calgary was our biggest ever, with more than 300 attendees raising a glass for a cause.
This year, the party moves to Taipei — and you’re invited!
Tickets are limited ($79) CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
If you believe that fellowship should be fun and make a difference… come join us (BREW.org). Bring your thirst for beer, your passion for service, and your desire to change lives.
BREW + WASHRAG = Fellowship with Impact.
We’ll see you in Taipei — cheers to beer, water, and doing good in the world!
