Water Management Scholarships - Achieving Lasting Impact by Educating the Next Generation
Since 2012, The Rotary Foundation has provided scholarship grants to 96 IHE Delft students from 31 countries so they could do their Master at the world leading institute for Water Management Education, the IHE-Delft in The Netherlands. The value of The Rotary Foundation grants program already exceeds 5 million US$.

Students have been selected from a large pool of students admitted to IHE-Delft. The vast majority of the students become aware of Rotary by obtaining a scholarship.

However, some students found their way to Rotary themselves and have been sponsored by a club directly in combination with other clubs and Districts, by obtaining a Scholarship Global Grant.

The Netherlands provides host counsellors to make sure the students settle in well for the 18 months of study.

Eleven of the scholars graduated with honours, and 80% of the students returned home and are working in the water sector.

Rotarians in The Netherlands are working on developing a long-lasting base to continue this program: there is no better and more effective way to improve water management around the globe, than by educating the next generation that is going to make a difference.

You can get involved in a number of different ways:
  1. If you know a capable student or young person working in water management, that would benefit from further education in water management, liaise with us and develop a Global Grant scholarship for this person.
  2. You, your club and District, could also pledge to financially support the program so that when we get to the next group of students we have more funds available to select additional students.
  3. Of course, those students that are now working on WASH in their home country can support local WASH / WASRAG Global Grants projects

We are looking at significant amounts of money, at least $500,000 to $700,000 per year to make sure 10 to 14 students get the opportunity to study at IHE in Delft. We are very fortunate that for the first time this year a number of Rotarians stood up, and pledged $350,000 as a Directed gift to this program. That is great! We could do with more such directed gifts and as indicated in addition we need the support of more clubs and District to get Scholarship Global Grants funded.

Dutch Rotarians are lucky to have this world-leading Institute for Water Management in their country. Every year, about 200 students from all over the world come and study at this institute. We feel very privileged that because of Rotary some 10 – 14 students get the opportunity to develop their water management competencies here in Delft. We see great people studying here, many of them will most certainly make a difference in the years to come.
